How To Use Search Firms & Employment Agencies
The use of Employment Agencies and Search Firms for new hires can be a quick, efficient and painless method of adding to your staff.
Before approaching an employment agency or search firm, the employer will need to make some decisions regarding their requirements.
Job description – The employer must have a complete idea of the duties that the new employee will perform and the salary they wish to pay for his/her service. The best way to approach this would be for you to have a complete job description. The description should state the hours and days of work required. State specific skills such as computer hardware & software required, as well as the tasks to be performed. If you plan to change your computer systems in the future, include what skills and experience will be necessary when changes are made.
Agency and search firm service requested - You may request different types of service when discussing a job opening. You may just want to review resumes, you may want to interview candidates suggested, or you may want only to see the three best candidates that the agency has interviewed for you. You can also “test drive” the candidate by hiring ‘temp to perm’. I would suggest that when you speak to the agency’s contact, ask to briefly go over the hiring options available. Always ask to review the candidates’ background before the interview.
Interview and Selection Polices - You have to determine how each candidate will be interviewed and selected who will do the interviewing and how many interviews will conducted for each candidate. Decide if you plan to administer any tests or if you want the agency to test and forward the result to you. Always insist on reference checks.
Agency fee - You should agree on the fee that the agency will charge you and the guarantee period if you hire a referred candidate.
